Top 5 Film & Television Apps in Australia in Q4 2022

The fourth quarter of 2022 saw significant activity in the Film & Television app category in Australia. Here, we examine the performance of the top five apps: SBS On Demand, Disney+, Paramount+, Netflix, and 9Now.

SBS On Demand, published by Special Broadcasting Service Corporation, saw a sharp increase in weekly downloads, peaking at 215K in the week of November 21. This spike was accompanied by a rise in weekly active users, reaching a high of 556K in the same week. However, the app did not generate any revenue during this period.

Disney+ from Disney maintained a robust weekly revenue, with a peak of approximately $1.4M in the week of November 28. Downloads hovered around 40K to 60K weekly, with an uptick to nearly 62K in the week of December 19. Active users remained strong, fluctuating between 1.7M and 2M throughout the quarter.

Paramount+, published by ViacomCBS Streaming, experienced a steady increase in both revenue and downloads. Weekly revenue reached about $217K in the week of November 21, while downloads peaked at 83K in the week of December 19. Active users showed a gradual rise, culminating at 207K in the final week of December.

Netflix, a product of Netflix, Inc., exhibited consistent weekly revenue, peaking at around $185K in the week of November 28. Downloads showed a positive trend, growing from 33K at the start of the quarter to about 63K in the last week of December. Active users remained robust, crossing 3.7M during the final weeks of the year.

Lastly, 9Now by NINE NETWORK AUSTRALIA PTY LTD saw its weekly downloads peak at 55K in the week of November 7. Active users also showed strength, peaking at 324K in the same week. Similar to SBS On Demand, 9Now did not generate any revenue during this period.
